Both methods are safe and available to all girls, women, and trans and non-binary people.
Surgical abortion
A surgical abortion can be performed from the 5th week of pregnancy.
Depending on the region in which you live, the delay to get an appointment will vary from a few days to 3 weeks.
What happens ?
It is recommended that a loved one accompanies you: friend, partner or relative among others, to help you get home.
Depending on the clinic, the accompanying person may be allowed to stay in the operating room or be asked to stay in the waiting room. Do not hesitate to ask questions to the staff on site, they are there to help you.
A surgical abortion is a minor procedure that lasts about 15 minutes and is performed under a local anesthetic. You can also take a sedative to reduce the pain. What you feel during the procedure varies from person to person but it could resemble menstrual cramps.
Medical abortion
A medical abortion can be performed up to 12 weeks gestation.
The termination occurs at home following a first appointment and two medications are prescribed.
Depending on the region in which you live, the delay to get an appointment may vary from 1 to 3 weeks. If you choose to go down this path, make sure you book an appointment as soon as possible.
What happens ?
When a person chooses this option, they take the first drug, called mifepristone, which stops the development of the pregnancy.
24 to 48 hours later, they must take a second drug, called misoprostol, which triggers contractions in the uterus and leads to the expulsion of the content of the uterus.
It is recommended to return to the clinic for a follow-up appointment after you have had a medical abortion. This appointment is used to make sure that the termination of pregnancy has taken place and that everything is in order.
